COURSE DESCRIPTION
New and emerging therapies have the potential to alter the futures of patients with β-thalassemia drastically, yet guidelines are dated and clinicians are unlikely to be conversant with novel and emerging therapies. Patients transitioning from pediatric to adult care for β-thalassemia are particularly vulnerable given a variety of concomitantly shifting variables, such as potential changes in location or oversight of care, change or adjustment in care needs (i.e., different medications or dosages), or change in eligibility for novel therapies. This activity will review therapeutic options and their associated AEs for the management of β-thalassemia across the lifestyle, recognize patient- and provider-level barriers to transition in care, and identify key strategies to support β-thalassemia patients moving from pediatric to adult care.
