Small-molecule inhibitor screen to identify mechanisms of sickle hemoglobin clearance by liver endothelium

Short name: Small-molecule inhibitor screen
Course start date: 06/23/2026

Description

This webinar discusses newly identified mechanisms of sickle hemoglobin (HbS) clearance by liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs) in sickle cell disease. The presentation focuses on how HbS is internalized through fluid-phase endocytosis and related pathways, as well as the role of lipid droplets and cellular metabolic state in regulating endothelial hemoglobin uptake and liver injury.

Learning Objectives

After attending this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the role of liver sinusoidal endothelial cells in clearance of extracellular sickle hemoglobin during hemolytic disease.
  • Describe the endocytic pathways involved in HbS uptake, including micropinocytosis and clathrin-mediated mechanisms.
  • Explain how lipid metabolism and lipid droplet accumulation influence endothelial hemoglobin internalization.
  • Evaluate the therapeutic implications of targeting endothelial Hb clearance pathways to reduce hemolysis-associated liver damage in sickle cell disease and related disorders.

Target Audience

  • Research trainees interested in learning new hematology research methods
  • Sickle cell researchers of all career levels
  • Medical students and those building core hematology knowledge
  • Residents and practitioners in primary care requiring hematology fundamentals
